Hinterbrook Nomad Pinot Noir 2016

2 images in all.

Strawberry on color with a nice strawberry nose. The color with lively in comparison to the usual garnet … On the mid palate the wine displays some nice strawberries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins and some nice acidity. There some earthy notes as well. This was quite good, but more firm than I expected. I wonder if may they did whole bunch ferment to increase the tannins. I would give it an -88. Quite nice given the price!

It’s always a joy to find Pinot Noir with spot-on varietal character at such a reasonable price. Bright cherry and raspberry are joined by hints of underbrush and mushrooms, all in good balance. Cavino Nemea Grande Reserve 2012

2 images in all.

Inky dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vibrant black fruits to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dusty tannins and some in balance acidity. The wine straight out of the bottle displayed some noticeable alcohol but this subsided quickly. This is a bigger wine, so be careful what you pair it with . We paired it with striploins and it went very well. I would give it an 88 or so. Quite nice and spot on for this lovely, hearty greek varietal.

2017 Inniskillin Reserve Chard

2 images in all.

I love chards, perfect pairing for scallops. Yum, a decadent meal for sure. Sometimes as I’m walking out of the Metro I pop into the WineRack store, which is where I grabbed this one. This chard is golden in color with a nice apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with nice apple and pear along with some nice vanilla notes. This is particular cahrd is not over oaked at all, slightly creamy in texture. On the medium length finish the wine has some nice smooth food friendly acidity and the vanilla builds nicely in the mouth. I would give it an -88 or so. Which for $20.95 is not a bad deal at all!

Casal de Ventozela Branco Vinho Verde 2017

2 images in all.

I don’t know Vinho Verde well but a colleague Greg was telling me about them so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Pale in color with a citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine has some noticeable effervescence, you can even see bubbles in the glass. There’s some nice green notes, maybe green apple, maybe lime, I struggled to place it to be honest. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp citrus and vibrant acidity. The effervescence through me off a little, I wasn’t expecting it. The wine is a lot drier to my tastes than 7g/l would imply. I would give the wine an -88. And given the price, definitely worth a try.

A blend of Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura, this is fresh and vibrant with notions of citrus and tropical fruit bound by a ribbon of brilliant acidity. A touch of spritz adds further lift. Sip with seafood, particularly roasted sardines with olives, capers and parsley. (Vintages panel, April 2018)

Sarl Champagne William Saintot Cuvee Seduction Champagne mini review

2 images in all.

Every year I give my nieces a treat at Christmas, a bottle of Pol Roger champagne for them to have a magical New Years eve … I recently attended a tasting of this champagne and was suitably impressed. The bottle is a little less than but the flavors are impeccable. Pale in color with a nice apple and pear nose. On the mid palate this is a lovely vibrant champage with apple/pear and loads of minerality coming through. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with citrus notes and minerality coating the palate beautifully. This is a smooth elegant yummy champagne. It doesn’t come cheap, but if your looking for something special this just might fit the bill. I would give it an 89-90. It’s 55% chard from 2015, and 45% 2014.  6.5g/l!

Fontanafredda Langhe Nebbiolo 2017

2 images in all.

Nebbiolo is the grape used in Barolos and Barbarescos, and when they are simply referred to by the grape as this one is, you can sometimes get some bargains. This one is dark in color with a nice red berry nose. Straight out of the bottle the alcohol is super noticeable. I chose to decant it and this helped a lot. I think the wine is just a little young. On the medium length finish this wine displays some lovely tannins and acidity that coat the mouth in typical Nebbiolo form. For the price this is a good wine and it can hold it’s own with pretty lively meals. We paired it with a red sauce spaghetti and it went well! I would give it an -88 or so.

From the LCBO web site: Check stock

750 mL bottle | VINTAGES#: 638312 $19.95

Made from the Nebbiolo grape of Barolo and Barbaresco fame, this wine is grown in limestone-rich hillside vineyards and matured in oak for eight months. Clayhouse Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

2 images in all.

Dark in color with a mild cherry nose. This wine is of two profiles, with and without food. Without food the wine displays some nice vibrant cherries to match the nose along with some nice mocha notes, and a hint of oak. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness, smooth tannins and nice acidity. With food it’s a lot softer so this is a food friendly wine but it needs to be something on the milder side. I paired it with lasagna and honestly it overwhelmed it. Salmon would seem like the perfect pairing. I would give it an 88 or so. A perfect sipping wine.

Pale in color with a honey suckle nose. On the mid palate the displays some sharp acidity, some smokey/flinty notes and some minerality. This is an odd/funky chenin. 2015 Ménage à Trois Decadence Cabernet Sauvignon

2 images in all.

I was wandering through my local LCBO and they were sampling this wine, I tried it and liked it enough to buy a bottle. I have to turn my reaction off to the silly name to even consider this wine, but I’ve been impressed by their chard … On sale right now for $2 off. Dark in color with an expressive cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with fruit forward cherry notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. It’s not as sweet as you might expect from 8g/l. The LCBO call it full bodied and smooth … too my tastes it’s a lot more fruit forward than this would imply. I would give it an -88. This is a general list product.

2017 Josh Cellars Chardonnay

2 images in all.

I was wandering through the LCBO and needed a cold bottle of chard to go with the cod I had planned for the meal and this one was there. Based on the description I grabbed it. Pale to slightly golden in color with a mild apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice apple and pear to match the nose along with some vanilla. It’s slightly creamy in texture. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry. This to my tastes is a lighter oaked chard showing more fruit than oaking in profile. I would give it an 88 or so. The milder flavors were perfect for the cod. Quite nice.

Left Field Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2017

Pale in color with a mild stone fruit nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with nice peach and pear. If your expecting a wimpy pinot gris go elsewhere because on the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp dry minerality, and fresh lively acidity. Not as long as some but it does linger nicely in the mouth. This is my kind of Pinot Gris. We paired it with shrimp/scallop fettucine Alfredo and it wen perfectly, held it’s own. I would give it an 88 or so. Definitely a drink now, fresh crisp wine! Not bad at all for the prices.

Château de Marsan 2015

2 images in all.

I was walking through the LCBO and wanted a hearty red to go with a striploin so I grabbed this one on a whim. Dark in color with a nice red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice plum notes along with some cherry. Reading the back of the bottle it’s 70% merlot and 30% cab. On the medium length finish the wine displays some oak, firm tannins and acidity. It’s a bit young and softened as it had been opened. It’s nice and dry. The back of the bottle says let it breath for an hour and that’s not a bad plan. It’s moderately complex. I would give it an -88. It paired really well with the striploin and held it’s own.
